  • Dagger hilt, ca. 1450; Timurid
    Iranian; Attributed to Samarqand, Uzbekistan
    Greenish black nephrite

    H. 2 in. (5.1 cm), W. 1 1/5 in. (3 cm), L. 4 in. (10.2 cm)
    Gift of Heber R. Bishop, 1902 (02.18.765)

Despite the stylization of the dragon-head terminals, the animal's inherent vitality and fierceness are pronounced. These characteristics as well, as the angularity of the "carving," have little in common with the sinuousness of the ultimate Chinese prototype.
