This basin is dedicated to al-Ashraf Abu al-Nasr Qa'itbay (r. 1468–96), the last great sultan of the Mamluk dynasty before it was replaced by the Ottomans in 1517. The repoussé work that forms the lobed petal-like decoration is typical of the late Mamluk period.
