This painting, from the same manuscript as 25.83.9, illustrates the entry of the Safavid prince Haidar Mirza into Istanbul with his officials in 1590. He was sent to the Ottomans as a hostage according to a treaty signed previously between the Ottomans and the Safavids. The painting exemplifies the Ottoman taste for realism and history in contrast to the more lyrical bent of contemporary painting from Safavid Iran. It accompanies a poem in praise of Sultan Murad III (r. 1574–95), whose death provides a terminus ante quem for the production of the manuscript.
