This pastel and its mate (47.103.24) were among the first that Johnston executed in Charleston, South Carolina, just following her arrival there from Dublin in 1708. The artist rendered the facial features with precision and blended colors, particularly in the hair, as she had done in the portraits that she completed in Ireland. Marianne Fleur Du Gue and her husband Pierre Bacot, a French-born businessman who lived most of his life in South Carolina, probably commissioned these portraits following their marriage, which took place sometime after 1705.
