The Love Song, 1868–?1873

Burne-Jones began this painting in 1868 and worked on it for several years. It was first shown in 1878 in an exhibition at the Grosvenor Gallery, London, that established the artist's reputation. The accompanying catalogue dated the work 1873 and cited a refrain from a Breton love song as its subtitle: "Alas, I know a love song, / Sad or happy, each in turn."
