The Spanish architect and designer Oscar Tusquets Blanca is an important figure in the international postmodern movement, which reacted against the influence of modernist design and theory dominant throughout much of the twentieth century. He lives and works in the Catalan capital of Barcelona. Tusquet's work reflects two main influences: the postmodern movement in architecture and design, and the distinct culture of his native Catalonia and its most significant modern architect, Antoni Gaudí. The "Alada" table exhibits one of postmodernism's most characteristic features, the visual reference to historical movements in design. In this case, the massive pedestal base of the table, with its organic legs stretching out to rest on four bronze lion's-paw feet, suggests Gaudí's distinctive Catalan Art Nouveau vocabulary.
