Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History

  • Panel with Christ and the Four Symbols of the Evangelists, carved ca. 1050
    Ottonian (possibly Fulda, Germany)
    Ivory; Overall 6 15/16 x 3 7/8 x 5/16 in. (17.7 x 9.8 x 0.8 cm)
    Gift of J. Pierpont Morgan, 1917 (17.190.51)

Here, Christ appears to display his wounds. The seven cloud forms may be a reference to the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. The remarkable detail and overall physical presentation of the subject suggest a close link to manuscript illuminations produced in the monastic scriptorium at Fulda.
