  • Box for game pieces, ca. 1300
    German
    Painted wood with iron mounts

    3 1/8 x 10 3/8 x 3 5/8 in. (7.9 x 26.4 x 9.2 cm)
Purchase, Gift of J. Pierpont Morgan, by exchange, 1976 (1976.327)

A unicorn, an elephant, a lion, and a dog are among the animals that enliven the decoration of this box. The roundels in which they are placed echo the form of medieval game pieces, which likely were once held inside. Along the top, the repeating motif of dogs' heads can be read in either yellow or green.
