  • Vase, 1879
John Bennett (American, born England, 1840–1907)
Painted and glazed earthenware; H. 12 in. (30.5 cm), Diam. 6 3/8 in. (16.2 cm)
Friends of the American Wing Fund, 1985 (1985.168)

Delicately rendered yet boldly outlined Japanesque prunus flowers and forsythia envelop the sides of this vase in a crisscrossing asymmetrical design. In contrast, the flattened, abstracted forsythia blossoms on the base and cover simultaneously unify the design and separate it into three horizontal sections—a feature of Far Eastern design adopted by Aesthetic Movement artisans to allow for a more eclectic combination of motifs.
