Thaw Collection, Jointly Owned by The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Morgan Library & Museum, Gift of Eugene V. Thaw, 2009 (2009.400.29)
Corot painted this sketch outdoors, at Lake Nemi, southeast of Rome, in June or July 1843. The view appears in two additional paintings by the artist, "View of Genzano with Rider and Peasant" (2009.400.30) and "Genzano: Goatherd and Village" (Phillips Collection, Washington, D. C.). Although Corot is thought to have given both of those works to friends, he kept this sketch until the end of his life.
