H. O. Havemeyer Collection, Bequest of Mrs. H. O. Havemeyer, 1929 (29.100.47)
Completed at the latest in 1899, when it was bought by the Parisian dealer Durand-Ruel, this work has been called at times "The Florentine Madonna" because the pose is similar to a typical Italian Madonna and Child. The identity of the sitters is not known, although the child's name was "Jules" and he appears in other works around this same time (see 09.27).
This work of art also appears on Connections: Motherhood
