The Friedsam Collection, Bequest of Michael Friedsam, 1931 (32.100.36)
This is one of the earliest portraits of a sitter shown engaged in his profession. The man may have been a banker, a money changer, or one of the many sixteenth-century merchants who handled both commodities and money. Isenbrant reworked the portrait extensively. The panel has been cut down on both sides, and strips were added later, changing the original proportions of the picture.
