  • Standing Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Infinite Compassion, 8th–9th century
    Thailand (Si Thep[?])
    Gold; H. 7 3/4 in. (19.7 cm)
Lent by Jeannette and Jonathan Rosen (L.2003.25)

The high hairstyle (jatamukuta) and the deerskin over the figure's left shoulder identify this figure as Avalokiteshvara, a bodhisattva who offered compassion and protection to devotees. It seems likely that this image was produced at the site of Si Thep, based on the form of the thin, elongated body and the understated clothing. This sculpture was fabricated from many pieces of fitted, worked gold.
