Family Itinerary for Children Ages 3–5: A Treasure Hunt for Creatures from Ancient Greece!

Our youngest visitors can discover the Met at their own speed, one nook and cranny at a time.

Take a trip back in time to ancient Greece to see animals and creatures—real and imagined. You'll be able to describe wonderful adventures when you get back! Some advice: be sure to bring paper and pencils for sketching. And before or after your trip to Greece, visit the Museum's Nolen Library, dive into picture books, and rev up your imagination!

    Bronze Head of a Griffin

    What a sharp, open beak, with a thin, curling tongue! You see only this fabulous creature's head. But a complete GRIFFIN has the head and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion.

    Terracotta Sarcophagus Rim

    Some SIRENS make noise, but this kind can sing. This creature has a bird's body, feet, and wings--and a woman's head. Find two. They're even wearing earrings.

    Terracotta Volute-Krater (vase for mixing wine and water)

    Two big BOARS come face to face. What are they up to?

    Marble Capital and Finial in the Form of a Sphinx

    It's called a SPHINX. The creature has a lion's body with wings and a woman's head. Look for different kinds of feathers painted on her body and wings.

    You can tell exactly what it is, even though it's not all here. Find a HORSE.

You might find ducks, dogs, and deer. You might find galloping horses and mighty lions. And you might find special creatures that are a combination of different animals—all in one. Look for wings, legs, claws, and heads. Which parts give the animal special power?
