Gallery 956 houses an exceptional collection of Renaissance paintings from Siena that, along with the holdings of the Department of European Paintings, constitutes one of the finest of its kind outside the Tuscan city.
Among the fifteenth-century Sienese masters, Sano di Pietro and Giovanni di Paolo are particularly well represented. In addition to images of the Virgin, there are engaging narrative scenes depicting lives of the saints, set in richly articulated interior spaces and extraordinary landscapes. Frequently, these small narrative panels were part of an altarpiece's predella, the lowermost horizontal component.
