Image: The Musicians, ca. 1595. Caravaggio (Michelangelo Merisi) (Italian, Lombard, 1571–1610). Rogers Fund, 1952 (52.81).

In the sixteenth century, groups of young musicians such as the one in this painting by Caravaggio would often meet to play at the home of a nobleman. In the foreground, we can see pages from what appears to be a book of madrigals. These secular songs were originally written for voices but later transcribed for instruments. In a moment we will hear a transcription for lute of the madrigal "Dove Son Quei Fieri Occhi"—"Where Are These Proud Eyes." It is a passionate work, and seems to complement Caravaggio's sensual portrayal of this quartet as it prepares for its next performance.
