As you can well imagine, it has not been easy to select the works of art reproduced hereto narrow down the field from more than two million objects to a mere twenty-five. The collection of the Metropolitan Museum is vast and encyclopedic, with masterworks in every known medium, from every part of the world, across five millennia of recorded time. Of consummate beauty and superb craftsmanship, these works speak of our highest aspirations, and of the enduring human desire to seek perfection.
Roughly grouped by civilization, some of these twenty-five treasures may echo long-standing enthusiasms of yours; but others may stimulate newfound curiosity. I encourage you to visit the Museum and The Cloisters as often as possible: to seek out a single work or to wander about the galleries, and to enjoy the infinite variety of art that can be found only at the Metropolitan. Most, if not all, of the particular works shown here will be on view; certain gallery installations rotate, and objects are occasionally removed for loan exhibitions and conservation.
