Style of Benjamin Arlaud (Continental, about 1706)
A Young Knight of the Garter, Possibly George Augustus (1683–1760), Later George II of Great Britain and Ireland
Vellum
Oval, 2 x 1 3/4 in. (52 x 45 mm)
Bequest of Millie Bruhl Fredrick, 1962
62.122.103
Pendant to MMA. 62.122.104.

The sitter wears the blue ribbon of the Order of the Garter.

The tentative identification of the sitter is based on comparison with a Godfrey Kneller portrait of 1716 in the Royal Collection (St. James's Palace, London). Its pendant may represent George's sister, Sophia Dorothea, or his wife, Caroline Ansbach, the sitter in MMA 55.107.1 [see Ref. Reynolds and Baetjer 1996].
