The influential marine painter Simon de Vlieger lived in Rotterdam and Delft before settling in Amsterdam about 1638. His silvery seascapes, like this one of about 1645–50, made a great impression upon Jan van de Cappelle (who owned nine paintings and over thirteen hundred drawings drawings by De Vlieger) and Willem van de Velde the Younger.
