Gallery Label This is a study for an altarpiece, "Christ Delivering the Keys to Saint Peter" (Musée Ingres, Montauban), commissioned in 1817 for San Trinità dei Monti, Rome, and completed in 1820. The composition of the altarpiece is based on Raphael's tapestry design of the same subject, which Ingres developed by means of a small oil sketch (Private collection), over seventy drawings, and seven oil studies in addition to the present one.
