A native of Lille, Vaillant trained in Antwerp and by the mid-1650s was well established as a portraitist in Amsterdam. The artist is also known as a pioneer of mezzotint engraving. In Dutch and Flemish portraits, falcons usually refer to hunting as an aristocratic sport.
