Attributed to Pieter Pietersz the Younger (Netherlandish, born about 1550, died 1611)
Portrait of a Moravian Woman
Vellum
10 1/2 x 7 1/4 in. (266 x 183 mm)
Bequest of Mary Clark Thompson, 1923
24.80.529
This miniature was formerly attributed to Nicholas Hilliard and was said to be a portrait of Mary Tudor (1496–1533), sister of Henry VIII of England, queen of Louis XII of France, and subsequently duchess of Suffolk [see Ref. Reynolds and Baetjer 1996]. It may be compared in style to a miniature portrait of Anna Cernohorská of Boskovice in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (no. P.168–1910), dated 1589 and attributed to Pieter Pietersz [published in Podává K. Svoboda, "Podobizna Anny Cernohorské z Boskovic v Londýne," Památky archeologické 35 (1926), pp. 464–67, pl. CLXVII].
