Gallery Label Hanneman was a highly successful portraitist in The Hague, where his Dutch version of Van Dyck's style ideally suited the court city's cosmopolitan patrons. This portrait of an elegant young woman dates from about 1653. The detailed passages of lace were probably painted by an assistant.
Notes There is a very similar portrait of a woman (ter Kuile 1976, no. 20) by Hanneman in the Pushkin Museum, Moscow, dated 1653. It has been suggested that a portrait of a man (ter Kuile no. 32) by Hanneman in the Dulwich Picture Gallery, London, signed and dated 1655, might be a pendant to the MMA work.
