In this fragment of a cassone panel, two lovers are playing chess (the youth is about to checkmate the young woman). Another fragment, showing an earlier moment in the story, hangs nearby, while a third fragment, with male spectators, belongs to the Berenson collection (Florence,Villa I Tatti).

The picture was painted in about 1475, when Liberale was employed at Siena illuminating choirbooks.
