Gallery LabelThough Spanish by birth, Ribera lived all of his adult life in Naples, which was ruled by a Spanish viceroy. During his early years in Rome, he adopted Caravaggio's practice of working directly from posed models. In his work figures drawn from everyday life are translated into compelling images of saints, prophets, and classical philosophers. Key to the impact of his paintings was his use of formal compositions derived from his study of Raphael. In this way Ribera's art brings together in a unique fashion the two main strands of seventeenth-century Italian painting: Caravaggesque naturalism and classical idealism.

This late work—one of Ribera's finest—epitomizes his achievement. Especially notable is the beautiful still life as well as the brilliant rendition of the fabrics and the tender expressions. Acquired in Genoa in 1807, between 1824 and 1919 it belonged to the earls of Northbrook and Harewood.
