Signatures, Inscriptions, and Markings Signed (lower right): I·V·D·Heyden
Gallery Label In this pendant to "The Huis ten Bosch Seen from the Back" (64.65.2), Van der Heyden shows the same parterre garden behind the palace from the side, with ivy-covered pavilions that echo the shape of the central "Hall of Orange" (Oranjezaal) inside. Classical sculptures and trellis-work obelisks mark the main axes between the French-inspired "parterres de broderie."
Notes The Huis ten Bosch (House in the Woods), near The Hague, was designed by the architect Pieter Post in about 1645 and completed in 1651 as a suburban villa for Amalia van Solms, wife of the Dutch stadtholder Prince Frederick Hendrick. The pendant to this picture, depicting the Huis ten Bosch and its gardens from the rear (south), is also in the Museum's collection (64.65.2). A smaller version of this painting is in the Kunsthalle, Hamburg (22.1 x 29.5 cm). Van der Heyden painted seven known views of the house and its grounds, one of which is dated 1665 or 1668.
