Summer High School Internships
The Met High School Internship Program offers paid opportunities for students who are two to three years from graduating high school (in grades 10 and 11) or obtaining their High School Equivalency degree and who, on the application deadline date, either reside in or attend a high school or home school in New York, New Jersey, or Connecticut. This program allows students to connect with art, museums, and creative professionals as they develop professional skills, network, and gain work experience.
This internship experience is not limited to young people who have a passion for art! The High School Internship Program allows you to connect one-on-one and in small cohorts with Museum professionals in a number of related fields, including editorial, marketing, social media, education, scientific research, conservation, and more. During your time at The Met, you have the chance to find the intersection of your interests as you gain insights from peers and professionals.
We are committed to addressing diversity in arts, museums, and creative careers. We are seeking interns with diverse backgrounds and interests who are excited about sharing their skills and ideas. Students who are members of groups that are historically underrepresented in these fields are strongly encouraged to apply.

Upon completion of the program, High School Interns receive a stipend commensurate with New York State minimum wage law.

Summer 2024
Application available: Thursday, February 1, 2024
Application deadline: Friday, March 8, 2024, 6 pm ET (interview notification: by Friday, April 19, 2024)
Program dates:
- Accepted Intern and Family Reception, Saturday, June 22, 2024, 1–3 pm: A two-hour session for interns and at least one parent or guardian to become familiar with the program and its staff and review requirements and expectations.
- Bootcamp, Wednesday, June 26, 2024, 9 am–5 pm: Eight-hour training and workshop to prepare interns for the internship.
- Departmental Placement: No less than forty hours (10 to 20 hours per week) observing, assisting, and being mentored by a staff member in one of the Museum's departments. The placement is determined by the intern's interests and the department’s internship project. The majority of departmental placement hours take place from Monday, July 8 through Friday, August 9, 2024, 9 am–1 pm and 1–6 pm. Learn more about departmental placements.
- Teen Fridays: Friday, July 19, and Friday, August 2, 2024, 4:30–6:30 pm
- Career Labs, Thursday, July 18, and Thursday, August 1, 2024, 1:30–3:30 pm: Two two-hour sessions with curators, educators, designers, conservators, and other staff who discuss their professional paths and roles at the Museum and lead workshops during which interns try out an element of their work.
- Biweekly Check-ins: One-hour biweekly sessions for interns to meet as a cohort, learn from each other's experiences, meet with mentors, and develop their career readiness skills.
- Final Event Planning Meeting: A two-hour session for interns to plan and create the final event.
- Final Event and Celebration: Friday, August 9, 2024, 5:30–7:30 pm: Interns develop an event to share the insights, experiences, and skills gained through their departmental placements with fellow interns and invited guests.

The application requires:
- A completed application form
- Short essay responses
- One letter of recommendation from a teacher, school administrator, or another adult who is not related to you who can write about why you would be a great intern for The Met. Good choices might be your coach or mentor, the leader of an after-school program or activity you participate in, or a supervisor from a previous internship or work experience.
Interviews
Interviews are required for finalists only. If you are selected as a finalist, we will contact you using the email you used to submit your application. It is your responsibility to ensure that your email address is accurate.
You will be asked to indicate which time and day you are available for an in-person interview. We will send a confirmation email with your interview date and additional information.
