Ernesta Drinker, la nipotina di due anni della pittrice Beaux e sua modella preferita, si tiene per mano alla balia, Mattie, la cui figura è auda­cemente tagliata fuori dal quadro. L’essenzialità dell’ innovativo disegno compositivo e le pennellate sciolte testimoniano l’ammirazione della Beaux per le opere di Édouard Manet ed Edgar Degas. Muovendosi con i suoi passettini da bimba sul pavimento lucido, Ernesta richiama i bambini di stirpe reale dipinti da Diego Velázquez, allo stesso tempo pieni di dignità e vulnerabili. La mano della balia Mattie offre un simbolo universale di protezione e sicurezza, mentre l’ampia superficie del grembiule e della divisa crea lo sfondo ideale per far risaltare la piccola figura della bambina.
