Born and trained in England, Arthur Stone immigrated in 1884 to the United States, where, in 1901, he established a silver workshop in Gardner, Massachusetts. A member of Boston’s Society of Arts and Crafts, he espoused the virtues of harmony and restraint. In the spirit of individualism, he allowed each craftsman to initial the work alongside the Stone trademark. This wine goblet is stamped with the letter T for the hollow-ware specialist Herbert A. Taylor. It is one of six goblets made for Julia Marlowe (1865–1950), an English-born actress who married the Shakespearean actor Edward H. Sothern (1859–1933) in 1911. The vine-and-grape motif and the chased monogram also appear on other silver that Stone designed for the couple.
