This armchair is part of a set of eight armchairs and one matching sofa made in 1819-1820 for James Beekman, Jr. of New York City for his home Mount Pleasant, which stood at First Avenue and 51st Street in Manhattan. It was passed down in the Beekman family until January 2000, when it was sold at Sotheby's and purchased by the Levy Gallery of New York.
