Brother and Sister (Le frère et la soeur)

Auguste Rodin French

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 800

Rodin’s older sister, Maria, died in 1862, causing the stricken young sculptor to enter a religious order and abandon his art for many months. Sentimental tenderness is rare in Rodin’s sculptures; here, it may reflect memories of the lost, sustaining love between brother and sister.
