Forms a pair of profile portraits of Russian czars along with 1972.145.36, Catherine II (Catherine the Great). Kholmogory, a settlement at the mouth of the Northern Dvina River possessed a thriving ivory- and bone-carving industry using the by-products of the hunting and whaling activities at nearby Archangelsk.
