It has been suggested that the female figure on this large plate depicts Loie Fuller, the celebrated American dancer who achieved fame in Paris at the end of the nineteenth century. The low-relief modeling of the figure and the shimmering iridescence of the luster glaze effectively suggest Fuller's well-known "Fire Dance", in which swirling drapery and colored lights were the only props.
