Bronze cista (toiletries box)

Praenestine

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 170

This oval-shaped container has solid-cast feet, each of which terminates in a depiction of a comic theater mask, an unusual subject for cista feet. They may show the influence of Greek New Comedy playwrights such as Menander. A solid-cast figure of a nude woman doing a back-bend serves as the handle.
