This helmet is one of a series thought to have been made for the guard of Pier Luigi Farnese (1503–1547), who ruled as duke of Parma and Piacenza from 1545 to 1547. The raised fleur-de-lis on either side refers to the Farnese coat of arms (six blue fleurs-de-lis on a gold ground).
