Seal: Huang Tingjian

Inscription: Colophon written in the style of Huang Tingjian, nicknamed Shangu (calligrapher and poet):

Translation: Wu Zhunhui showed me Wen Huzhou (Tong)'s handscroll painting "Rosy Sunset". The sight of it made me sigh all day. Its heroic spirit greatly resembles that of Wang Mojie (Wei), and its painstaking technique is not inferior to that of Guan Tong. Mr. Dongpo (Su Shi) praised Yüko by saying that he could mingle with the myriad wonders of creations with the tip of his brush, but (Su) did not mention his skill at landscape painting. Could Dongpo possibly have missed seeing this scroll?
When this painting first came into my hands, it delighted me very much and I treasured it for several months before returning it. When I was exiled to faraway Yizhou, I hastened to send a servant (for it). But from that time on, I can only see it in my dreams.

The seal under his name reads "Huang Tingjian". He was governor in the Shaosheng era (1094–97) but was later exiled to Yizhou. He was very famous for his poems and is known as the founder of the Jiangsu school of Chinese poetry.
