Portrait of a Young Man

Bronzino (Agnolo di Cosimo di Mariano) Italian

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 612

In this supremely elegant portrait, the aloof sitter presents a masklike face of calm composure that is seemingly parodied by the grotesque heads on the furniture; a third face (below the blue gloves) is formed—as though by chance—by the fabric folds near the sitter’s codpiece. Inspired by Michelangelo’s decorative friezes in the Medici Chapel, these transgressive heads express the same kinds of inversions and ambiguity found in Bronzino’s burlesque poetry (examples are on view nearby). The literary interests of the sitter are indicated by the small book (of Petrarch’s poetry?) he marks with his finger.
