Ulf Küster inFritz von Uhde: Vom Realismus zum Impressionismus. Ed. Dorothee Hansen. Exh. cat., Kunsthalle Bremen. Ostfildern, 1998, p. 136, ill., calls it "Auf dem Heimweg," dates it 1889, and states that its location is unknown; notes that it is the first in a succession of paintings depicting figures on a country lane, comparing it to "Schwerer Gang" (1890; Neue Pinakothek, Munich) and "Der Heilige Abend" (1890; collection C. Duisberg); reproduces a chalk sketch for this painting (1889; Staatliche Graphische Sammlung, Munich) and identifies the bleak landscape as the Dachau moors.
Dietulf Sander inFritz von Uhde: Vom Realismus zum Impressionismus. Ed. Dorothee Hansen. Exh. cat., Kunsthalle Bremen. Ostfildern, 1998, p. 128, notes its similarity to other Uhde paintings with secular themes, such as "Im Herbst" (1890; Museum der bildenden Künste, Leipzig) and "Am Morgen" (1889–90; Hamburger Kunsthalle).
Küster (1998) identifies the site of this picture as the Dachau moors, which appears in several Uhde paintings from this period. There is a chalk sketch for our painting in the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung, Munich.
