Madonna and Child

Andrea del Sarto (Andrea d'Agnolo) Italian

Not on view

Late in his career Sarto painted this richly colored and beautifully composed Madonna and Child as a private devotional painting. As is often the case with the artist, it is known in several versions, one of which is still in Florence (see ill.). Sarto and his workshop would have used a cartoon to transfer the composition to a new support, but the decisions about color and details such as drapery and ornament would have been made afresh by the artist as he confronted the panel. This method of working is comparable to that used in the larger and more complex panels of the Holy Family and Charity.
