Small Jar

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 451

The molded decoration of this greenish-blue glass jar includes pairs of simple palmettes arranged one above the other in eight narrow vertical compartments. Together, these suggest both a ninth-to-tenth century dating and an Iraq provenance for this small jar. The impression of an eagle with spread wings under the base, which is not usually visible, may be a factory stamp.
