Madonna and Child

Workshop of Ugolino da Siena (Ugolino di Nerio) Italian

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 952

Ugolino was a pupil of Duccio, the preeminent painter in fourteenth-century Siena and a pivotal figure in early Renaissance art. He may have assisted Duccio in painting the ""Maestà," the celebrated altarpiece for Siena Cathedral, completed in 1311. The present painting, which formed the center panel of a polyptych (multi-paneled altarpiece) was modeled upon the Madonna and Child in the "Maesta," and Ugolino may have used templates to transfer the design.
