Plaque with the Holy Women at the Sepulchre

German

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 304

Presented here are scenes from Gospel accounts of Jesus’ meetings with his
followers after the Resurrection. Each plaque is composed of multiple pieces of
walrus ivory carved in high relief. These plaques, along with others in Cologne,
London, and Berlin, decorated the front of an altar or pulpit. They were originally
set into a wood or metal framework and painted.
