Four Gospels in Armenian

Armenian

Not on view

The Nativity of Christ scene on the left and the Presentation in the Temple on the right demonstrate the brightly colored, dramatic Khizan style of the Lake Van region. In the Nativity, angels in the sky guide the shepherd toward baby Jesus, who rests beneath a starlit cave with three animals. Below, the Virgin Mary reclines, and Joseph faces the three Magi, whose Mongol-inspired dress marks their eastern origin. In the Presentation, Simeon holds Christ across from Mary.
