This playful tie is one of five sent by Picasso to Alfred H. Barr, Jr. for the opening of "Picasso: 75th Anniversary Exhibition" in 1957. Barr, who organized the show at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, gave this tie to William S. Lieberman, then curator of prints at the Modern, who had assisted with the exhibition and selected the drawings for the show. From 1979 to 2004, Lieberman was chairman of the Department of Twentieth-Century Art at The Met. Barr, founding director of the Museum of Modern Art, was famous for his "eye"—the art-world term for someone who recognizes quality in art; Barr's reputation was clearly not lost on Picasso.
