Kohl vase

Middle Kingdom

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 109

Found within a wooden box with a sliding top (27.3.1), this is one of the earliest kohl vases, designed to hold a mineral such as galena used for eye paint, in the Museum. Its somewhat awkward shape and relatively wide opening are typical of the kohl vessels from this period. Four additional cosmetic jars were discovered in the same box.
