Reliquary of the "Holy Cross of the Vegetarians" (Khotakerats')

Armenian

Not on view

Prince Each‘i Proshian, the donor of this reliquary, appears at the bottom center of the frame and holds his hands raised in the ancient orant prayer pose. His Mongol royal attire reflects the Proshian’s status as one of the Armenian families whose wealth derived from their control of trade routes for the Mongols. The richly jeweled cross on the reliquary’s interior contains a fragment of the True Cross. On the back is a handsome dedicatory inscription.
