Antependium or Altar Frontal

Armenian

Not on view

This altar frontal displays the important role Armenians played in spreading motifs and materials around the globe. It is made of silk, a textile whose trade the Armenians dominated in Safavid Persia. The design combines embroidered floral patterns popular in Persia with images of the symbols of the four evangelists and a scene of the annunciation to the Virgin inspired by Western European prints.
