Grand Minaret, Alexandria (73. Alexandrie. 1842. Grand Minaret.?)

Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey French

Not on view

Identified by Girault only as the Grand Minaret, this building no longer survives in Alexandria. Photographs of a British bombardment of the city in 1882 show it in what would have been the modern quarter. Therefore, it was an early nineteenth-century minaret built in a traditional Mamluk style, evidence that medieval revivalism, which had in part instigated Girault's journey, was not confined to the West.
