Khachkar

Armenian

Not on view

Although damaged, this exquisite work has the lace-style carving typically found on thirteenth- and fourteenth-century khachkars, especially in southern Armenia. Cloud-like vines scroll around the cross supported by haloed angels at the center. The angels that support the cross recall the evangelist Saint Matthew’s description of the sign of the Second Coming (24:30).
