Gospel Book

Armenian

Not on view

This manuscript, open to the evangelist portrait of Matthew, is typical of works produced for the elite Armenians of New Julfa, who sought luxury objects that recalled their past. This Cilician-inspired image is similar to ones produced in Constantinople and reflects the close connections between the Armenian elites of Constantinople and New Julfa. Cilician-revival illuminations were incredibly popular, becoming the Armenian international style of the later seventeenth century.
